Coolers are places just after the pellet mill in a pellet production installation. It is used for the cooling and drying of the hot pellet.

There are three types of coolers used in the modern feed industry: the horizontal, vertical and counter-current coolers. Each type has some basic advantages.

Counter-current cooler

Advantages:

  • Takes up little floor space
  • Requires little volume of air
  • Good function even at the beginning and the end of production
  • Little maintenance
  • Limited initial investment

Disadvantages:

  • Cooling is not homogeneous if the product is not well distributed over the entire surface

Vertical cooler

Advantages:

  • Takes up little floor space
  • Mechanics are quite simple

Disadvantages:

  • Not suitable for very fine products or products containing a great deal of powder
  • Limited capacity
  • Can damage the pellets

Horizontal cooler

Advantages:

  • Requires little height
  • Very high capacity
  • Can be used with many types of products

Disadvantages:

  • Complex mechanics requiring maintenance
  • Cooling problems at the beginning and end of production
